Our favorite freshman English teacher!
Q: Why did you choose to teach at Fairmont?
Mrs. S (S): My sister worked here when I was in school for my teaching credential. I started teaching summer school first, then was eventually hired at HAC teaching 8th grade.
Q: What are your thoughts on Fairmont?
S: I love it! It’s a great school with bright, fun, and hardworking students.
Q; What has your experience been like working at Fairmont?
S: Unique. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before. Prior to Fairmont, I worked for an HR firm. This is more fast-paced and fun.
Q: Being a teacher can be pretty intense with all the lesson planning and grading. How do you maintain a work-life balance?
S: I only read and answer emails during work hours. I do send and receive texts for ASB. But other than that, I try to make sure the time at home is spent with my family.
Q: How did you end up teaching? Was this always your goal?
S: I think I knew even back in high school that I wanted to teach English. However, once in college and majoring in English, I made the decision to finish early and not get my teaching credential. I went into editing for small businesses. I even helped edit a book about Warren Buffett. Then I worked for an HR firm for 5 years. I loved my boss and colleagues, but I didn’t love the work. During that time, I spent my nights working towards my Masters in English. Once I finished that, I decided to quit my job and return to school for my teaching credential. The rest is history.
Q: Have you ever had a favorite student?
S: Maybe, but I would never tell!
Q: Without focusing on just one person, what do you think makes a good student?
S: Kindness, respect, care for others and self, try to have fun, and enjoy your high school experience.
Q: Is English really your favorite subject, or would you rather teach something else?
S: English is by far my favorite subject. I grew up going to the library with my grandma every day of summer, and bookstores with my mom every single weekend. I remember both of my parents reading voraciously. That fostered in me a love for reading at a very young age.
N: We would love to learn more about you as a person. How’s Keanu doing?
S: Keanu is amazing. Thank you for asking. He’s wild and funny and has the best personality. He likes to hide in closets and behind doors to scare anyone that passes by. He loves people and being outside. He’s like Miley Cyrus -- “Can’t be tamed.”
K: Are you married? If so, how did you meet your significant other?
S: I met my husband, Tim, eight years ago through a mutual friend. We bonded over our love for music and joking around. Now, we are trying to teach Keanu about the importance of music and laughter.
Q: Now it’s time for our speed questions. Are you ready, Ms. S?
S: Sure!
Q: Where is your dream vacation?
S: Greece!
Q: Life story?
S: Middle child of 5 kids. Big, close-knit family. Very close with my grandparents. Always been a people person.
Q: Favorite book?
S: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn & Fried Green Tomatoes
Q: Favorite unit to teach and why?
S: How can I pick just one?
Q: What's your go-to Starbucks drink?
S: Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso w/Almond Milk or Green Tea Lemonade w/o sweetener
Q: Worst childhood injury?
S: I fell on the side of a barbeque when I was 4. I got a 3rd degree burn all along the side of my arm and had to go to the hospital to get it wrapped. A giant blood blister developed beneath it and popped when my sister punched it. The doctors told me my arm would never be the same, but my grandma prayed for me daily and applied countless natural remedies to the burn. Eventually, the scar disappeared, and my arm fully healed without scarring.
Q: Favorite musical artist?
S: The Eagles, Dashboard Confessional, The Goo Goo Dolls…so many!
Q: Biggest childhood obsession?
S: Boy Bands!
Q: Most embarrassing high school memory?
S: At the last minute, for one of the biggest football games of the season, our two eagle mascots backed out. They asked the cheerleaders for volunteers, and my best friend and I volunteered with the one condition being that no one would know it was us performing. For the next hour, we tried to make the most embarrassing dance moves possible, thinking that no one would know it was us anyway. During one of the dance moves where I was bending over backward, the eagle’s head fell off and exposed me! The whole crowd erupted in laughter, and I ran off the side of the field. It was caught on camera, and my friends and family have never let me live it down.
Q: Celebrity crush/crushes?
S: Taylor Kitsch & Jason Mamoa
Thank you, Mrs. S!
